Gov. Kathy Hochul’s surprise, last-minute attempt to kill congestion tolling in New York City has unleashed a backlash. In decades past, newspapers would have adorned editorial pages with satirical political cartoons. Today we have Photoshop. Here’s a sample of today’s offerings.
NEW YORK TIMES
Sure the Times has a big-budget, but its got no nuts. Its never going to risk offending anybody, so it never going to entertain anybody either. All its got to offer is bland, thrice-boiled mush.
NEW YORKER
New Yorker magazine is known for its cartoons. After seeing their congestion tolling offering I have to ask, Why? It’s utterly forgettable.
NEW YORK POST
Most Greenies hate the rabidly right-wing New York Post, with good reason. The Post never meet a Big Oil plutocrat or gas-guzzling SUV it didn’t like. Still, its a tabloid newspaper, which means its not afraid to push button. Its political cartooning at least has a pulse.
HEATMAP
The new environmental news blog says it offers “climate news for the real world.” Its deep-bench of contributors suggests its got deep pockets. If that’s true, then why does its graphic look it was made by a middle-aged person fooling around with Photoshop for the first time?
TRANSPORTATION ALTERNATIVES
Just for comparison’s sake, here’s the activisits’ entry. Is it effective agitprop? Does it make you want to hit the streets?
STREETSBLOG
Not surprisingly, Streetsblog, led by a former New York Post editor, has the best graphic and its reporting is solid too. That’s the congestion tolling crisis in a humorous nutshell. Simple, effective. Bonus point for its fake falling rocks.
